The owner of the Hog in Horsley says that the planned three month shutdown of the B4058 Horsley Hill would cut off around 80 per cent of his customer based.
Luke Honeychurch, owner of The Hog in Horsley, said that had the three month closure been in place, it would have cut off more than 80 per cent of his customer base and made the pub unsustainable.
Wales & West Utilities has also ruled out temporary traffic lights, overnight working, or trench plating as mitigation measures.
Matt Rees, programme controller for Stroud at Wales & West Utilities, said: "We will soon be working in the Horsley Hill area of Stroud to reinforce the gas network.
"To keep our workers and the public safe while we do this work, it’s been agreed that Horsley Hill Road will be closed from its junction with Downend to its junction with Narrowcut Lane from September 1 to October 30.
