New Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a scheme to cap bus fares at £2 from January 2027, down from the current £3 limit. The move is part of a national effort to encourage greater use of public transport and make everyday travel more affordable. Phil Riley, leader of Blackburn with Darwen Council and chair of the Lancashire Combined County Authority’s Transport Committee, said: "The £2 fare cap is great news for residents across Lancashire. "Affordable bus travel helps people get to work, education, healthcare and other essential services. Government figures suggest previous fare caps increased bus travel and improved access to opportunities, particularly for people travelling to employment or education.
