Armed officers and the police helicopter attended the scene and located the man, who was detained. A 47-year-old man from Skelmersdale was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and remains in police custody. Later that day, at around 7.15pm, officers carrying out search enquiries at an address in Birkrig discovered what was described as a grenade-type device. As a precaution, a small number of neighbouring flats were evacuated while the device was examined. Police said an investigation remains ongoing and have appealed for anyone with information or footage to come forward.
