Researchers in Spain have reported promising progress toward a non-invasive treatment for certain forms of blindness, demonstrating that a new class of light-activated drug candidates can restore vision-related behaviours in animal models of retinal degeneration. Retinal degeneration is the underlying cause of conditions including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which together affect an estimated 200 million people globally.
