Now what I see is a teen reacting to emotional blows with studied indifference. Nonchalance has become a social media buzz term, with TikTok creators proclaiming, “I am so unbothered,” choosing peace and detachment over drama, especially when it comes to relationships. The teen brain does not make it easy to play it cool. Yet, when you get young people talking openly about the idea of nonchalance, what comes clear is this: They hate it. If they keep hiding behind the sunglasses of nonchalance, they may lose the chance to practice the harder—and much more valuable—skill of actually caring.
