The United States Department of State paused the issuance of immigrant visas to Colombians and issued a 1% federal excise tax on certain remittance transfers. The 1.2 million Colombians living in the U.S., the largest concentration of Colombian migrants anywhere outside Colombia, are navigating both simultaneously. Nonimmigrant visas, including tourist visas, student visas, H-1B work visas, and L-1 transfers, continue to be processed normally and are entirely unaffected by the directive. Bank wire transfers, ACH transfers, and international transfers funded by a U.S.-issued debit or credit card are explicitly exempt. Diaspora money is accelerating.
