A formal notification has been issued in recognition of the immense historical, archaeological and cultural value embodied in these sites. Governor Saxena emphasised that Ladakh’s ancient monasteries, forts, caves, petroglyphs and rock carvings are not merely architectural or artistic relics but living testimonies of the region’s civilisational depth and cultural continuity. Declaring them as Protected Monuments, he said, lays a strong institutional foundation for scientific conservation, responsible cultural tourism, academic research and enhanced public awareness of Ladakh’s historical legacy. The list of newly notified Protected Monuments spans both Leh and Kargil districts, reflecting the geographical breadth of Ladakh’s heritage. Together, these sites represent the artistic brilliance, spiritual traditions and historical resilience of Ladakh’s people.
