At Carlisle Crown Court, 52-year-old Albert Darren Fawcett was initially facing an allegation of dangerous driving, which he denied. But the prosecution accepted his guilty plea to the lesser alternative charge of careless driving. Brendan Burke, prosecuting, played video footage of the incident, which happened on September 17 last year on the Sellafield to Seascale road. The defendant was driving at an estimated 20mph in an incident lasting seven seconds. “You were driving at approximately 20mph and passing with such close proximity [to the protestors] I consider that speed was inappropriate.”
