Kerala’s ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) Thursday decided to implement the Union Government’s Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme in state-run schools — a significant U-turn for a coalition that had once strenuously opposed it.
After a UDF meeting Thursday, alliance convener and Congress MP Adoor Prakash said the coalition had decided to implement the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre’s PM SHRI in Kerala schools.
“The previous LDF government had signed an MoU with the Centre.
While in the Opposition, it had criticised the scheme, accusing the previous LDF government of facilitating the Sangh Parivar’s “saffronisation” of school education by signing the MoU with the Centre.
The apparent back-pedalling has led the previous LDF coalition to target the government.
