Soybean gall midge, one of two fly midges associated with soybeans, was recently detected in North Dakota for the first time in four years. As of July 23, soybean gall midge has been detected in 189 counties across seven states in the Midwest. Soybean gall midge, which typically manifests in two generations per year in affected areas, appears inside the stem of a soybean plant, slowly feeding beneath the epidermis. Producers who find soybean gall midge in their fields are encouraged to contact NDSU Extension Entomology to document infestation. If you find soybean gall midge, please contact Extension Entomology (janet.knodel@ndsu.edu) and/or your local county Extension office.
