Some Minneapolis City Council members wanted to pass on a $300,000 federal grant to modernize the police department's bullet-tracing system, which helps solve gun crimes, because of references to "illegal aliens" in the federal notice about the grants. Several of the more progressive council members opposed applying for the grant, while more moderate council members said while they didn't like the language used in the notice, the grant is badly needed to help fight violent crime. Minneapolis Police Department Commander Kris Brown said the department was among the 170 NIBIN sites invited to apply for the grant. Council members Aisha Chughtai and Aurin Chowdhury echoed his concerns. Council Vice President Jamal Osman, who said while he's concerned about the "very concerning" language, the grant will help fight crime and "catch bad guys."
