The US ban on foreign-made advanced robotic devices reaches a lot further than humanoid machines, and that includes the robot vacuum sitting in your hallway.
The FCC confirmed to PCMag that the ban, which stems from a White House order, applies to both robot vacuums and robot lawn mowers.
Add the other criteria, which include weighing more than 4.4 pounds with the dock included, having sensors, wireless connectivity, and locally installed software, and almost every robot vacuum on the market qualifies.
IDC’s numbers had all five of last year’s top robot vacuum makers as Chinese firms, led by Roborock, Ecovacs, and Dreame.
Ottawa has restricted Chinese tech before, banning Huawei and ZTE from 5G networks in 2022 and, more recently, Ontario barring Chinese drones from government and OPP use this past May.
