The U.S. Embassy announced on July 30 that Amy W. Diaz has assumed the position of Chargé d’Affaires in Georgia, becoming the embassy’s top diplomatic representative as Washington has yet to appoint a new ambassador to Tbilisi.
She replaces Alan Purcell, who has served as Chargé d’Affaires and acting U.S. ambassador to Georgia since Ambassador Robin Dunnigan retired from the diplomatic service and departed the country in July 2025.
Diaz joined the U.S. State Department in 2002 as a Presidential Management Fellow and entered the Foreign Service in 2005.
The Georgian Dream government has repeatedly said it wants to reset ties with the United States “from a clean slate” and restore the strategic partnership through a “specific roadmap.”
Later that year, Washington imposed sanctions on Georgian Dream founder and billionare honorary chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili.
