New figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the borough’s estimated population dropped by 1.06 per cent to 121,748 in mid-2025, down from 123,051 the previous year.
This decline contrasts with the wider trend across Hertfordshire, where other areas saw increases.
Stevenage saw the largest growth in the county with its population climbing by 0.93 per cent to 92,081.
The latest figures form part of the ONS’s annual population estimates for England and Wales.
According to government statistics, population growth has slowed to its lowest rate since the Covid-19 pandemic.
