MEXICO CITY — Indigenous Maya communities across Yucatán, Quintana Roo, and Campeche have been granted a 15-day window to formalize their opposition to real estate companies using Maya words for commercial housing developments without community authorization. The proceedings target several property developers accused of unauthorized commercial exploitation. The first complaint, filed by members of the Maya People and the Great Maya Council of Quintana Roo, challenges the unauthorized commercial branding of the word “Kuxtal” by Altura 1704 Proyectos and associated developers. Indautor initiated the infringement proceedings under the Federal Law for the Protection of the Cultural Heritage of Indigenous and Afromexican Peoples and Communities. This administrative process marks a significant legal precedent in Mexico’s efforts to halt cultural misappropriation and commercial exploitation of indigenous languages by private real estate firms operating throughout the region.
