Holidaymakers were forced to brave smoke and flames as they fled from campsites around Dunwich Heath, including Dunwich Cliffs Estate and Cliff House holiday park as the fire took hold at the beauty spot at around 5.30pm on Wednesday (July 29). Villagers in neighbouring Westleton went into emergency mode to support 47 of the evacuees, providing them with food and drink, as well as accommodation. They went to bed at 11.15pm, but Mr North said at that point the smoke became "quite acrid and noticeable". Stephen Bullock and his partner Christine Miller were staying at Dunwich Cliffs Estate caravan park, having travelled from Canvey Island in Essex for a three or four day stay. Another holiday maker Ed, from Epping in Essex, was staying at Dunwich Cliff.
