A pilot is recovering after his gyrocopter crashed during takeoff at the Petaluma Municipal Airport Wednesday evening. Firefighters say the single-occupant aircraft ultimately came to rest just off the runway shortly after the incident unfolded. Fortunately, the pilot was able to climb out of the craft unassisted and did not suffer any major injuries. Responders evaluated the pilot at the scene while clearing the area around the damaged aircraft. It remains unclear what caused the crash as officials look into the circumstances leading up to takeoff.
