The United States and Saudi Arabia launched joint strikes on Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) after attacks targeted U.S. forces and Saudi energy facilities, deepening the regional conflict involving Iran and its allies, according to the BBC.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operation targeted weapons and logistics sites used by groups that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed.
The PMF, an umbrella organization of mostly Shiite militias that Iraq formally incorporated into its security forces, condemned the operation as a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
Saudi defense ministry spokesperson Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said Iran-backed militias launched drones from Iraq toward oil facilities in Riyadh and eastern Saudi Arabia.
The strikes ended a three-day pause in direct hostilities between Washington and Tehran and raised new concerns about a wider conflict across Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Strait of Hormuz.
