A new study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association showed that even in individuals with significant hyposalivation after head and neck radiation, topical 38% silver diamine fluoride (SDF) slowed the development of radiation-induced caries (RIC). The efficacy of professionally applied 38% silver diamine fluoride SDF in preventing coronal and root RIC was assessed in this investigation. 56 patients were randomized and given topical 38% SDF or a placebo before and one and three months following radiation treatment. Despite large decreases in salivary flow, professionally administered 38% SDF dramatically slowed the advancement of RIC during a six-month period.
