Pennsylvania state officials are pushing back on the Trump administration’s claim that there may be more than 14,000 potential noncitizens registered to vote in the state.
Schmidt also pointed out gaps in a program that the Department of Homeland Security uses to identify noncitizens.
The Department of Homeland Security has not publicly disclosed, or disclosed to the other three states, precisely how it identified the potential noncitizen registrants.
Letters to the states said the department used publicly available information but matched some of the potential noncitizens using Social Security numbers.
In a statement to Votebeat, the Department of Homeland Security declined to explain its methods but offered a pointed response to Schmidt’s letter.
