The 1963 porno movie Stanley Kubrick seriously considered directing: “You have written the definitive blowjob!” The best directors in the business aren’t beholden to any genre, and they can’t achieve greatness without constantly expanding their cinematic horizons, but that doesn’t make the idea of Stanley Kubrick helming a porno any less weird. And yet, during the making of Dr Strangelove, Terry Southern screened a hardcore porn flick for Kubrick at his home. It was an idea he technically brought to fruition, with Southern’s novel, Blue Movie, published in 1970. “I thought Kubrick would be the ideal person to direct such a movie,” the writer offered.
