E. coli was detected in the Tory Island private group water scheme in 2025, a new Environmental Protection Agency report has revealed.
Tory Island was among 14 community-run private group schemes nationwide that failed to meet the E. coli drinking-water standard last year.
The report highlights that drinking water quality in private supplies continues to fall short of the standards achieved by public supplies delivered by Uisce Éireann.
A second Donegal supply, Townawilly in South West Donegal, was among 17 private group schemes that failed to meet the standard for trihalomethanes, or THMs, in 2025.
Compliance with the E. coli standard in 2025 was 95.5%, but this shows no significant improvement over recent years.
