(ABC 6 News) — A new report is suggesting that the cyberattacks on more than 30 Minnesota community water systems may be linked to Iran.
MNIT said a “coordinated cyberattack targeted operational technology” at these water systems occurred over the course of Sunday, July 26 and Monday, July 27.
In 2024, the group initially targeted Israeli water systems that used equipment also found in U.S. companies.
“I would not go so far as to speculate that water systems in particular were deliberately being targeted,” said Jason Baker, a threat intelligence lead at GuidePoint Security.
At this time, Kaiser said the threat is not limited to water systems, and more attacks targeting critical infrastructure could occur.
