MARSHFIELD, WI (OnFocus) – The Marshfield Common Council has directed city staff to begin drafting an ordinance regulating overnight camping after council members raised concerns about people sleeping in vehicles on city streets and parking lots.
Supporters said the proposal is intended to establish clear rules about where overnight camping is permitted rather than prohibit it outright.
During the discussion, council members acknowledged the issue has generated complaints from residents about overnight stays in campers, recreational vehicles and passenger vehicles throughout the city.
Some council members questioned whether the proposal could effectively become an ordinance targeting homelessness.
City staff will prepare a proposed ordinance for council review at a future meeting.
