Two elderly sisters in Ankara were allegedly defrauded of assets worth nearly TL 40 million ($843,600) by scammers posing as police officers and prosecutors who convinced them they faced arrest as part of an investigation into the Gülen movement, the state-run TRT Haber reported. The Gülen movement is a faith-based civic initiative inspired by the late Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen. They claimed the sisters’ identification documents had been found on people detained in an investigation into the Gülen movement and that warrants had been issued for their arrest. The sisters were told they were under drone surveillance and warned that disclosing the supposed operation would constitute a crime. The scammers also claimed that Gülen movement members worked at their bank branches and instructed them to withdraw their gold and take it home so it could be placed under “state protection.”
