AAA Club Alliance is sharing tips to help homeowners protect their property while away. The advice comes as the FBI reports that a burglary occurs somewhere in the United States every 28 to 40 seconds and also that burglars often take advantage of homes that appear unoccupied, such as during vacation periods. Residential burglaries continued a downward trend with reports decreasing by 19% in the first 6 months of 2025, according to the Council on Criminal Justice, however, there are still hundreds of thousands of burglaries each year, according to the United States Department of Justice. In 2023, the FBI reported nearly 853, 000 burglaries. AAA also advises asking a trusted neighbor or family member to check on your home, avoiding sharing vacation plans publicly, creating a home inventory, and reviewing your insurance coverage before traveling.
