In “The Griffin Incident,” we get at least a little more about Division 12, thanks to some follow-up dialogue. La’an’s phrasing makes Division 12 sound similar to another recently-introduced part of Starfleet, Division 14. As shown in the Lower Decks episode “Much Ado About Boimler,” Division 14 focuses on scientific and medical mysteries, particularly those affecting personnel. Obviously, “X-Files in Star Trek” is an elevator pitch that would make any genre nerd excited. But it’s particularly compelling given modern Star Trek‘s obsession with a different secret Starfleet division, Section 31.
