Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, and its 55 member associations have unanimously agreed to boycott all FIFA competitions, including the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cup and the Club World Cup, if FIFA proceeds with plans to sell ownership stakes in its major tournaments to private investors. “We unanimously and unequivocally reject FIFA’s proposal to transfer ownership interests in the World Cup and other FIFA competitions to private investors,” the statement said. “The World Cup cannot be treated as an investment product. The first major test of that position could come in October when the Women’s World Cup play-offs are scheduled to take place. European countries have won 13 of the 23 FIFA World Cups played so far, while six of the eight quarter-finalists at this year’s Women’s World Cup were European teams, including champions Spain.
