One person was killed, and several others were injured following a multi-vehicle wreck involving two 18-wheelers on Interstate 55 Wednesday. According to Copiah County Coroner Judy Evans, the pileup began after an initial accident near Crystal Springs caused traffic to slow. While the first 18-wheeler managed to come to a stop, a second 18-wheeler was unable to stop in time, crashing into the traffic ahead. Several injured individuals were transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, with some flown by an AirCare helicopter and others taken by ground ambulance. Evans confirmed one fatality at the scene, adding that the victim’s identity is currently being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
