Morsels from The Daily Morning Astorian, July 29, 1884:• Glue is now used in the manufacture of cheap grades of ice cream. That is ice cream “with a stick in it,” as it were. Note: There were stories circulating in 1884 about glue, which was then made from animal by-products, being added to ice cream as a thickener. In 1920, the New York Health Authority banned the use of glue or “any filthy or decomposed substances” in ice cream. Note: The 1884 amendment to the Oregon Constitution giving women the right to vote did not pass.
