Tyler Childers Thinks Of America When He Hears This Song
['Michael Broerman']
L4LM
As the United States approached its 250th birthday, the Newport Folk Festival talked to generations of singer-songwriters about rediscovering America through music.
From Childers’ mule shed, the interview began with a Woody Guthrie quote: “It’s a folk singer’s job to comfort disturbed people and to disturb comfortable people.”
That responsibility for a songwriter to connect with listeners brought Childers back to “Souvenirs,” the Prine song that had comforted him as a boy following the death of his grandpa.
Later in the interview, Childers was asked what song or artist makes him think about America or feel like an American when he hears it.
James Booker: “Make A Better World” (Earl King)Later in the interview, Childers turned his attention toward his own backyard to talk about the current state of life in Appalachia.
