A two-day celebration is set this weekend as Marshall native, Wiley University alumna and social work pioneer Velma Banks marks her annual homecoming with an art exhibit and Celebration of Land event. The art exhibit is scheduled 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at The Ponder Welcome Center on the Wiley campus. The sixth annual Celebration of Land — a public outdoor event — will follow from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at 4004 Jewel Gooch Road in Harrison County’s Macedonia community. “I’m going to exhibit my artwork,” Banks said, noting she brought ancestral art pieces to Marshall from New York, where she lives. She’s not only excited to share her art exhibition but also her ancestral roots through the outdoor Celebration of Land event.
