On the issue of the Proportional Representation (PR) System versus the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) System, both have advantages and challenges.
The PR system allows political parties to win seats in Parliament based on the percentage of votes they receive nationwide or within an electoral area.
As Sierra Leone considers constitutional amendments, the priority should not simply be choosing one electoral system over another.
Whatever system is adopted must promote national unity, strengthen democratic institutions, improve accountability, and guarantee equal representation for all citizens.
Democracy is strongest when the people have confidence that their voices matter and that their votes genuinely determine who governs them.
