Preliminary investigations found that a drone caused the fire involving two gas vessels at Damietta Port, the Egyptian Cabinet said on Thursday.
Egyptian authorities confirmed on Thursday, 30 July, that a drone caused the fire involving two gas vessels at Damietta Port the previous day.
On Wednesday, Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced that a fire had broken out involving a regasification vessel and a gas storage vessel at the Mediterranean port.
Before the Cabinet’s confirmation, Reuters had reported that British maritime-security firm Ambrey assessed that a drone had struck a gas storage vessel at the port.
The Cabinet’s latest statement confirms the involvement of a drone but does not assign responsibility to any country, organisation or individual.
