Firefighters tackle record 63 grass fires in a single day as heat grips capital

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) responded to 63 grass fires during a 24-hour period on July 29, amid soaring temperatures of more than 30C and prolonged dry conditions.
More than 1,300 emergency calls were taken, with firefighters attending more than 500 incidents.
"Control Officers answered more than 1,300 emergency calls, while firefighters have been operating in arduous, hot conditions to tackle fires and protect homes and communities."
Havering recorded the highest number of grass fires at 47, followed by Barking and Dagenham with 16.
"In these hot, dry conditions, grass fires can spread incredibly quickly, threatening homes, wildlife and the environment, while tying up vital emergency resources."
