Swarms of them gathering at music festivals, country and county shows, village fetes, beaches and, as I experienced at the weekend, airshows. To mark the occasion, Shuttleworth, the historic aircraft collection on the other side of London, assembled nearly a dozen airworthy examples for their Summer Air Show, different types developed during the Second World War. An impressive, soul-stirring tribute aided by Walton’s Spitfire Prelude and Fugue playing over the Tannoy. Keen amateur photographers with camera lenses almost as large as the aircraft themselves, determined to add this rare soul-stirring sight to their collection. Families on a day out, young children cavorting in and around sun-protective tents, while parents relaxed with glasses of something sparkling.
