Comparing Burnham’s education policy to Thatcher’s indicates that Burnham’s rhetoric about making hard hats equal to graduation caps is not going to make any difference to the pro-business agenda in education. Nevertheless, educators will also welcome the development of technical education if it is properly funded and resourced. Education is indeed more than a pipeline to work, and the creation of functional skilled cogs for the capitalist machine. This is said partly in jest, but make no mistake, education, real education, is a dangerous thing. These proposed changes to technical education are welcome, but they will hit the skids unless there is sufficient investment in schools.
