Hurricane Genevieve is forecast to remain well away from Hawaii even as it continues to weaken over the coming days, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Genevieve is the first Category 5 storm of the Eastern Pacific season and the basin's first in two years.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm is expected to hold that heading through the weekend, gaining forward speed as the ridge expands westward.
Late in the weekend and into early next week, Genevieve is forecast to turn northwest and then north as a separate upper-level low moves in from the east.
Increasing northwesterly wind shear, cooling ocean waters and dry mid-level air are expected to push Genevieve below hurricane strength by Thursday night or early Friday, the National Hurricane Center said.
