Edwin Díaz returned to the New York Mets' bullpen Saturday, and recorded a save in a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, completing a 10-game suspension issued by Major League Baseball for a foreign-substance violation.
Díaz opened Saturday's ninth inning by hitting Pirates shortstop Oneil Cruz with a pitch, then retired the next two batters he faced.
During the suspension, Díaz was permitted to work out with the team before games but could not enter the clubhouse, dugout or bullpen once games began.
Díaz's return restores an All-Star arm to a Mets bullpen that had to adjust its closer role for 10 games.
Díaz is expected to remain the Mets' primary closer as the team continues its schedule, with his workload likely monitored closely given the layoff.
