LAKE ANDES — For 21 years, the Garcia family has gathered each summer to celebrate the life of David Garcia, a teenager remembered for his faith, determination and love of basketball.
The court would provide a year-round home for David Garcia Day and a place for young people to gather.
David Garcia battled leukemia from age 7 until his death in August 2007 at age 16.
The mission ball, covered with Bible verses, is awarded to an individual who the Garcia family believes demonstrated strong character and faith during the David Garcia Day basketball tournament in Lake Andes.
While attendance and the number of teams have varied, Garcia said one thing remains constant — young people continue asking when David Garcia Day will return each summer.
