A Gisborne job programme assisted 31 young people into employment over the past year, while the initiative helped 1000 people find work nationwide.
The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs programme, run by Local Government New Zealand and the Ministry of Social Development, supports those aged 16 to 24 into work.
Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz and her team referred 57 young people for work during the year ending June, with 31 successfully securing permanent positions.
Hihi said not every placement resulted in permanent employment, but even short-term opportunities helped young people develop workplace skills, confidence and communication for future opportunities.
