When Adlai Stevenson landed at Rochester’s Lobb Field airport on Sept. 6, 1952, he was greeted by a reception fit for a president.
“Chuck” Mayo and Dr. Howard Gray.
At the airport, Stevenson posed for photographs in Chuck Mayo’s car, then transferred to an open car for the short ride downtown.
Four years later, Stevenson was once again running for the presidency, and during the campaign for the Minnesota primary, he returned to Rochester.
“Perhaps no defeated presidential candidate so impressed the hearts and minds of Americans as did Adlai Stevenson,” the Post-Bulletin editorialized.
