Last year, Gifford and her SpaceXray initiative teammates were part of a milestone event: the first radiographs, or X-rays, taken in space. The idea to test X-rays in space, Gifford said, came from her work with AstroAccess, which advocates for disability-inclusive space travel. The first human X-ray taken in microgravity, on a Nov. 8, 2022 parabolic flight, is an image of Dr. Sheyna Gifford's hand. Two days later, just before the mission came to an end, the astronauts took X-rays of their chests, abdomens and pelvises. After the mission, Gifford's team had three radiologists evaluate the X-rays taken before and during the flight.
