John Wagstaff, 78, says he will miss his loyal customers at the Dalton Post Office, near Thirsk, in North Yorkshire, after deciding to stand down.
Mr Wagstaff said: "“It’s a beautiful place and I have been very happy here.
A trained chemist from Leeds, Mr Wagstaff took over the Dalton branch after struggling to find work in his field during an economic downturn.
Despite being registered blind for many years, Mr Wagstaff continued serving the community with the help of visual aids and braille-marked banknotes.
Mr Wagstaff now plans to spend more time with his wife Margaret and enjoy gardening, woodwork, and countryside walks once he has recovered from his fall.
