It is only last month that ‘Pangi wood craft art’ was awarded the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India. I am enthralled by my past travels to Pangi with an indelible trail of impressions of the unique art. The wood art of Pangi Valley is an ancient, intricate tribal craft natively known as Kasht Nakashi. Pangi woodworkers carve deeply into the wood blocks using handmade iron chisels to create remarkable shadows. Wood art is a part of daily survival and domestic life in the valley.
