Being overlooked is the violence being brought by local law enforcement. Ruiz’s killing is a painful reminder that state and local police have been left out of the conversation about violence and accountability. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said, “Our community deserves full transparency and accountability,” and the killing is being investigated as a homicide. The message should be clear: If America wants accountability from federal law enforcement, it is time to demand real accountability for police as well.
