The discovery was made during fieldwork for the UNESCO-supported Grabouw River Guardians project and was shared by the Kogelberg Biosphere in a Facebook post marking World Nature Conservation Day. According to the organisation, the affected stretch of river showed widespread algae, while no fish, aquatic insects or other visible aquatic species were observed during the visit. Why it mattersThe Klipdrift River feeds into the Palmiet River system, an important water source that supports downstream communities, agriculture and local biodiversity.
