Māori who whakapapa Māori have the unique right to choose whether they enrol on the Māori roll or the General roll.
Those on the Māori roll vote in one of the seven Māori electorates, while those on the General roll vote in a geographically based general electorate.
The size of the Māori roll also has a direct impact on the number and boundaries of Māori electorates through the Māori Electoral Population calculation undertaken after each Census.
