Young Māori remain disproportionately affected by a weakening labour market, raising concerns that fewer education and employment opportunities are increasing the risk of long-term disadvantage. Prime has also linked the Government’s wider policy direction towards Māori with its approach to child wellbeing. The Government maintains that its Oranga Tamariki reforms are necessary to restore public confidence in the youth justice system and better protect communities from repeat offending.
