Police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are investigating a man accused of possessing counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes.
“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the suspect after he was found in possession of counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes worth $300,” Ngong said.
Ngong said the suspected counterfeit notes had been sent to Wau, the capital of neighboring Western Bahr el Ghazal State, for verification as part of the investigation.
Garang Akok, a lawyer based in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, said South Sudan’s Penal Code Act, 2008, criminalizes the possession, use and circulation of counterfeit currency.
“Using or dealing in counterfeit banknotes is prohibited under Section 357 of the Penal Code Act, 2008,” Akok said.
